What are some questions about cosmetic surgery that people are interested in knowing? how do they afford it?

What do people want cosmetic surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is not as expensive as you might think. Almost all of the patients I care for a regular, working class/middle class people. Instead of taking a vacation, they get new boobs or a normal looking nose. Some people finance it.





How about cosmetic procedures used after huge weight loss? We do abdominoplasties, mastopexies and brachioplasties for people who have lost a lot of weight and have a bunch of extra skin hanging on them. They are some fo the happiest patients I see.
Reply:I am an assistant to one of the surgeons in a large plastic/reconstructive surgery office. We see patients for medical reasons as well as cosmetic. We see patients for lesion excisions, hand injuries, hand/finger pain, lacerations, reconstruction following mastectomy, scar revisions, tissue expander insertions, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), face lifts, neck lifts, mastopexy (breast lift), breast augmentation (implants), rhinoplasty (nose surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), liposuction, body lifts for patients who have had gastric bypass surgery. The body contouring/reshaping may include removing excess skin from the arms and legs, thigh lifts, body lifts. We also see patient for breast reductions.





Some conditions can be submitted to the insurance company for pre-approval to see if they can be considered medical but that process takes 6-8 weeks. For patients that can't afford ir otherwise, it's worth the wait to see if they would cover it. Such conditions can be abdominoplasty for weight loss, painful or bleedng keloids, painful or bleeding scars, breast reductions.





One procedure that sems to be the most popular, least expensive and makes a huge diffeence in the appearance is eyelid surgery and it can be done in the surgeon's office. I had it done 3 years ago and it took years off my appearance. I have also had Restylane injections for the folds from the nose to the outer corners of the mouth and Botox on my forehead, between the eyes and outr corners of the eyes. It smooths everything out and much less noticiable wrinkles.





Prices can range from $500 for Botox and fillers to $10,000.00 for a facelift and that's for the surgeon only. We charge about $2500.00 for upper and lower eyelids. Alot of patients finance their procedures or just save up until they can do it. So many people are so happy and it does change peoples' lives.





The downside is patient unrealistic expectations from the surgery. They watch too many makeover shows and the reality is....you won't look 20, especially if you're 40, an abdominoplasty/lipo usually doesn't produce washboard abs unless you watch your diet afterwards and excercise. You aren't going to look like a runway model but you most likely will feel so much better about your self and have more self confidence. The surgeons try to make a person look as good as they can for their age.
